I Will Not Weep
A Novel of the Navajo Long Walk and Exile
by Janet Sabina
Set in the years 1864 to 1868, "I Will Not Weep' presents a twelve year old Navajo boy who endures captivity and near starvation at the hands of the U.S. Army in what is now Arizona and New Mexico. His older sister escapes the cruel campaign to relocate their people, but is captured and sold to slave owners in Texas territory.
In stark, spare prose out of respect for the traditional Navajo avoidance of unnecessary words, "I Will Not Weep' brings brother and sister through terror, grief and feats of intelligence and courage.
